Event Recap: Pre-Health Symposium

Last year, Alpha Epsilon Delta’s Pre-Health Symposium was held in an online (Zoom) format for the safety of everyone, school representatives and students alike. However, this year, the 49th Annual PHS arrived in hybrid format for the very first time, with three evenings of Zoom sessions and one day in person. This allowed for a larger range of schools to be represented, even ones far away or ones that could not come in-person.

Not only this, but this was the first year in which other universities’ chapters of AED were invited, to transform this from just Baylor University’s Pre-Health Symposium into a regional one, allowing us to share with other pre-health students a dearly beloved and important event to our AED chapter.

Over February 16-18, schools and students were able to meet online. There were 20 schools and programs scheduled to attend over the three days, including Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University Physician Assistant Program, Baylor College of Medicine, New York University College of Dentistry, Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biological Sciences, and Baylor University Occupational Therapy Program.

On February 19, the day started early at the BSB with a variety of programs in attendance. There were schools such as Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. Other organizations like Kaplan were present as well to advise students on other aspects of their pre-health careers.

The highlight of the whole PHS experience is having the opportunity to listen to some of the representatives speak about various subjects through breakout sessions, providing pre-health students information (like how to be a competitive applicant), as well as being able to speak with the various schools and organizations during the in-person event at tables around the BSB.

Other fun aspects of in-person PHS were having the opportunity to take a professional headshot and the appearance of Baylor mascots Bruiser and Marigold, dressed smartly in professional attire and lab coats.

This Pre-Health Symposium would not have been possible without the efforts and vision of AED’s Vice President of Scholarly Events, Kristen Giebel, and the Pre-Health Symposium Chair officers. Thank you for your hard work!
