11/11 Weekly Email

Hey AED! We hope you had a relaxing weekend! We have some important updates this week, so please read through them carefully.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Steppin’ Out! The Hills family was incredibly grateful for your support on their ranch. Also, shout-out to our amazing volunteers at the Prehealth Gala—the event was a huge success thanks to you!

Join us for our fifth general meeting on Wednesday, featuring a presentation by Dr. Ron Rodriguez, Physician and Assistant Dean at Long School of Medicine-UT Health San Antonio. We’re also hosting a toy drive for Operation Christmas Child! Earn an LSE by packing a shoebox of items (or bring the individual donations if you don’t have a box) and drop them off at the meeting! More details of what items to pack are found in the service section.

Pie-A-Prehealth is happening tomorrow at Fountain Mall from 5-6pm! Pie your favorite executive board members and earn a social credit ($4 for 1 pie; $7 for 2 pies).

Lastly, this Friday, join us from 2-5 pm at the World Hunger Relief Farm for another LSE opportunity. And don’t miss our latest blog post from Historian Sneha Reddy, featuring AED’s Global Health Chairs.

Have a great week everyone!

Thank you to those that filled out the application for the MSOxAED Medical Mission Trip to South Africa! The deadline has passed, and you will receive your acceptance mid-November.

Upcoming Large Service Events

AED requires general members to attend 3 Large Service Events each semester! If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Lexi (lexi_haviland1@baylor.edu).

  • La Puerta is asking for volunteers to help run their fundraiser called Abre La Puerta on Thursday, November 14 at the Hurd Center on campus! This is a great way to take a break from studying and contribute to La Puerta’s mission.

  • Our first LSE with World Hunger Relief Farm is on Friday, November 15th!

    • We will be serving with ASDA from 2-5PM. If you are interested in coming please fill out this FORM, so I can send the volunteer coordinator a headcount & send you the online release form.

    • This will be a super fun hands-on volunteer opportunity that allows us to assist the farm staff with whatever they need!

    • This service event can count for 3 weekly hours or 1 LSE credit depending on your needs.

    • Lexi will be attending, and she can provide rides to anyone who needs it.

  • Samaritan’s Purse is holding their yearly Operation Christmas Child Event. Samaritan’s Purse is collecting shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for children around the world.

Bring a shoe-box (if you have one) with two-three items of each of these categories (toys, school supplies, hygiene items–6 item minimum) to General Meeting #5 (11/13).

    • If you do not have a shoebox, no worries! You can still earn an LSE by providing the items.

    • If you are unable to drop off at the GM, reach out to Mariele or Lexi to drop off or meet on campus another time. The deadline to donate is the day before Thanksgiving Break (11/22).

    • Try to be generous as these will be shipped out to kids in developing countries as a Christmas gift! Please refer to this LINKfor a list of what to pack and not pack (i.e. you can pack a toothbrush but toothpaste is not allowed).

      • Refer to the pictures below for some ideas of what to pack in your shoebox!

    • Reminder: General Members can only use 1 pay-for-credit LSE per semester! If you donated diapers, you cannot earn another pay-for-credit LSE this semester. However, we will still welcome donations. :)

  • Loaves of Love occurs every 2 weeks in Earle Classroom. Loaves of Love is a weekly service opportunity, but AED members can attend ANY date this semester for 1 LSE credit.

    • Note: Loaves of Love can only count for 1 LSE of your required 3, and you MUST bring a donation (6 loaves of Hill Country Extra Thin Bread (blue)- $1/piece) in order to earn an LSE.

    • The next date will be Friday, November 15th from 4:45-5:45PM. To receive credit, fill out this LINK (there is a 10-member max for LSE credit), show up at 4:45PM, bring your donations, and fill out the sign-up on the whiteboard.

    • Go support those in need and donate blood at the Blood Drive happening next week! Every donation counts, and just one pint can save up to 3 lives! Sign-up to table here for a scholarship credit. Donate blood to earn an LSE credit and send a picture to Aatiqah_Hussain1@baylor.edu (if you did not donate in the September Blood Drive) - and get a free blanket.
