Hey AED! We hope you all had a fun Halloween weekend! We have some important updates this week, so please read through them carefully.

This Wednesday, AED is hosting its semesterly Thrift Store at Fountain Mall! Swing by to find some new pieces for your wardrobe— all proceeds will support the Medical Mission Trip to South Africa next year. If you’re interested in helping out, we still have a few volunteer spots open.

Additionally, don’t forget that Steppin’ Out is this Saturday morning, followed by the Pre-Health Charity Gala later that evening, so be sure to grab your ticket ASAP!

Forms and Deadlines:

  • AEDxMSO Mission Trip: Apply for the AEDxMSO Mission Trip to South Africa! The deadline to apply is November 6th.

  • Pre-Health Charity Gala Tabling: Please sign up to table this fall’s Pre-Health Charity Gala any day between 10/9 – 11/07!

    • You will receive 1 scholarship credit for completing at least two 30-minute shifts.

    • Additionally, PLEASE make sure to fill out this google form at the end of your tabling shift in order to receive credit.

  • Pre-Health Charity Gala Volunteering: Please sign up to volunteer at this year’s Pre-Health Charity Gala!

    • You will receive 1 scholarship credit for working a shift.

Be sure to review the Master Spreadsheet periodically throughout the semester to check your credits. Email mariele_patungan1@baylor.edu if you have any questions!

General Meeting Dates:

  • Our general meetings this semester will be on 9/18, 10/2, 10/16, 10/30, 11/13, & 12/4, at BSB A108 (NEW LOCATION!!)! Because our new room hosts an SI session until 7:30pm, our general meetings will now begin at 7:40pm and end at 8:40pm. Go ahead and plan on putting those on your calendar so you can meet the GM requirement. Please email Evan or Mariele if you cannot attend one or all of these GM dates at least one week in advance. We will only provide GM exemptions to those with classes or exams.

Come out and support AED’s very own Langley Cerovich at his Common Grounds Concert happening THIS Friday at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available at the door for $15 or can be purchased in advance for $10 using this link.

Second Annual Pre-Health Charity Gala | November 9th | 7:00-10:00 PM | Mark and Paula Hurd Welcome Center - Ballroom D

Purchase your ticket TODAY to attend Baylor’s Second Annual Pre-Health Charity Gala! This event will feature a catered dinner and dessert from Baris and Insomnia Cookies, a charity auction featuring gift baskets donated by local businesses in Waco, a photobooth, and more!

Tickets are selling for $15, or $20 for the Couples Pricing Special, so make sure to buy your tickets as soon as possible!

Scholarly Events

  • Pre-Health Charity Gala 2024 Tabling: Please fill out this form if you are interested in tabling for this year’s Pre-Health Charity Gala any day between 10/9 – 11/07! You will receive 1 scholarship credit for completing at least two 30-minute shifts. This is a great opportunity to socialize with general members of other pre-health organizations! Additionally, PLEASE make sure to fill out this google form at the end of your tabling shift in order to receive credit.

  • Pre-Health Charity Gala 2024 Volunteering: Please sign up to volunteer at this year’s Pre-Health Charity Gala on 11/9! You will receive ONE scholarship credit for working a shift. This is a great opportunity to socialize with the pre-health community and help us put on a great event to benefit The Shepherd’s Heart!

  • MedTalk was a great success! We had over 125 people come to hear our 5 speakers share how they are pioneering innovation that will transform the medical field. Thank you to everyone that attended!

Service

AEDxMSO Mission Trip

AED’s annual medical-mission trip is heading to South Africa for the first time!!

Join AED & MSO from May 21st-31st for an incredible experience with BU Missions and One More Child. If you attend the trip you get 2 semesters worth of LSEs covered, and you’ll have a chance to get closer with AED members while serving internationally. Plus, AED will fundraise to help cover the cost of your trip.

Please reach out to annie_lodge1@baylor.edu and anne_howard1@baylor.edu with any questions! The priority deadline is October 23rd (get an extra $100 credit for the trip), and the final deadline is November 6th

Upcoming Large Service Events

AED requires general members to attend 3 Large Service Events each semester! If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Lexi (lexi_haviland1@baylor.edu).

  • We are having an LSE to sort donations and items for the thrift store. To earn an LSE, join us for Thrift Store Tagging on Tuesday, November 5th from 6-7:30PM in Cashion C101.

    All proceeds of the Thrift Store go to our Mission Trip. The last day the collection box will be in the E wing of the BSB is Monday 11/4. If you have any last donations, please bring them to the tagging event on Tuesday, or reach out to Ian or Lexi. 

  • AED’s Thrift Store is going to be on Wednesday, November 6th from 11:30-6:00pm outside the SUB.

    • Please sign up for two slots (1 hour total) at this LINK to earn one LSE credit.

    • Each additional hour will count for one weekly service hour. Please reach out to ian_stahl1@baylor.edu with any questions. 

  • Steppin’ Out is Saturday, November 9th from 9-1pm!

    • Thank you to everyone who registered. Our official time and location will be given to us by Tuesday, but it will be from 8-12 pm or 9-1pm.

    • Location: 3064 North Katy Road, Elm Mott, Texas

    • Job Description: Painting, yard clean up, mulching, cleaning.

    • Recommended Attire: Dress according to the weather. Closed toed shoes and comfortable clothes 

    • We will meet at First Baptist Church Elm Mott, at 122 W. Main St. before going out to our assigned address.

  • Samaritan’s Purse is holding their yearly Operation Christmas Child Event. Samaritan’s Purse is collecting shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for children around the world.

    Bring a shoe-box (if you have one) with two-three items of each of these categories (toys, school supplies, hygiene items–6 item minimum) to General Meeting #5 (11/13).

    • If you do not have a shoebox, no worries! You can still earn an LSE by providing the items.

    • If you are unable to drop off at the GM, reach out to Mariele or Lexi to drop off or meet on campus another time. The deadline to donate is the day before Thanksgiving Break (11/22).

    • Try to be generous as these will be shipped out to kids in developing countries as a Christmas gift! Please refer to this LINK for a list of what to pack and not pack (i.e. you can pack a toothbrush but toothpaste is not allowed).

      • Refer to the pictures below for some ideas of what to pack in your shoebox!

    • Reminder: General Members can only use 1 pay-for-credit LSE per semester! If you donated diapers, you cannot earn another pay-for-credit LSE this semester. However, we will still welcome donations. 

  • La Puerta is asking for volunteers to help run their fundraiser called Abre La Puerta on Thursday, November 14 at the Hurd Center on campus! This is a great way to take a break from studying and contribute to La Puerta’s mission. Volunteers are needed in 3 ways: 

    • Stuffing event programs at the La Puerta Office (Wednesday, 11/13 1-3pm)

    • Event program placement on tables at the Hurd Center (Thursday, 11/14 9-10am)

    • Clean up at the Hurd (Thursday, 11/14 1-2:30pm)

    • Sign-up for one of these shifts at this LINK by this Friday, November 8th to register. To earn an LSE, register by 11/8 and send a picture of you volunteering to Lexi_Haviland1@baylor.edu. Please reach out to carlos_alvaradorich1@baylor.edu with any questions.

  • Our first LSE with World Hunger Relief Farm is on Friday, November 15th!

    • We will be serving with ASDA from 2-5PM. If you are interested in coming please fill out this FORM, so I can send the volunteer coordinator a headcount & send you the online release form.

    • This will be a super fun hands-on volunteer opportunity that allows us to assist the farm staff with whatever they need!

    • Lexi will be attending, and she can provide rides to anyone who needs it.

  • Loaves of Love occurs every 2 weeks in Earle Classroom. Loaves of Love is a weekly service opportunity, but AED members can attend ANY date this semester for 1 LSE credit.

    • Note: Loaves of Love can only count for 1 LSE of your required 3, and you MUST bring a donation (6 loaves of Hill Country Extra Thin Bread (blue)- $1/piece) in order to earn an LSE.

    • The next date will be Friday, November 15th from 4:45-5:45PM. To receive credit, fill out this LINK (there is a 10-member max for LSE credit), show up at 4:45PM, bring your donations, and fill out the sign-up on the whiteboard.

Weekly Service Form and Updates

  • Donate to the AED thrift store in order to earn weekly hours & support the mission trip! We will take donations starting this Wednesday, October 16th at the General Meeting.

    • For every 4 items, you will receive one volunteer hour (up to 4 hours)! This can include shirts, shorts, sweaters, hats and many other articles of clothing. Additionally, a pair of lightly worn shoes or a winter jacket will count for a whole hour each!

    • The last day to drop off at the collection box in the E wing of the BSB is Monday, November 4th. Before bagging your items, please take a picture so we are able to tell on the google form which items you donated.

    • All proceeds for the thrift store will be going to our mission trip in May to South Africa! We will also take donations at the next general meeting on October 30th. 

  • Note to Waco Family Medicine Volunteers: The AED polos have arrived! Please begin wearing these each week to volunteering. Please reach out to ian_stahl1@baylor.edu if you have not picked up your polo yet!

  • Thank you to those who have filled out the Weekly Service Form & reached out to the clinical service chairs! The Master Spreadsheet has been updated with the volunteer sites that you have been assigned to! Please reach out to Lexi (lexi_haviland1@baylor.edu) if you think anything is off. 

    • If you have not heard from your Weekly Service Chair, please reach out to Lexi.

Dues

  • General Member Semester Dues are $35 

  • Dues can be paid to our Venmo: @BaylorAED

  • Dues can be paid to our Venmo (@BaylorAED) or Zelle (aed.txbeta@gmail.com)

    • Please do not mark your dues as a service as it charges AED.

    • Dues for new members will be addressed at the new member meeting!

Fundraisers:

The Fall AED Thrift Store is coming up on November 6 from 11:00-6:00pm, and will be hosted right outside the SUB!

Members can donate clothes to the thrift store in exchange for service hours!

  • For every 4 items, you will receive one volunteer hour. 

  • Lightly worn shoes and jackets count for a full hour each. 

  • Maximum of 4 service hours.

    • If you wish to donate clothes beyond the 4 service hour equivalent, we would be happy to accept them!

    • All proceeds from the thrift store will be going to support our mission trip with One More Child!

    • Donations can be placed in the donation box in the E-wing of the BSB Atrium!

      • Please make sure to fill out the form (QR code on the side of the box) to record the donations you make!

      • If the donation box does not work for you, please reach out to ian_stahl1@baylor.edu or danny_le1@baylor.edu to organize a donation pickup!
